PRODUCT REVIEW
First, I should say that I work my bins pretty hard when I'm birding. I need rugged construction, good rubber armor, a clear, bright image which remains clean and crisp from one side of the visual field to the other. I need both a wide field to scan large shorebird or gull flocks, and the ability to change focus quickly from, say, a distant soaring raptor to a sparrow which has just popped up in a bush in front of me without spending half the morning turning the focus wheel. I need close focus so I can really study that hummingbird at the window feeder, or try to identify that butterfly which has alighted on the path a few feet ahead of me. I need a bright, crisp image, even at marginal light levels, an image which remains flat and sharp if I have to pan across a flock of birds quickly, without developing that annnoying 'fish-eye-lens' distortion common to so many inexpensive binoculars. I need fog- and water-proofing, given the often-foul Canadian climate. I need it to fit my hand so comfortably in such a way that I can carry it and forget it's there until I need it. I need a good long eye-relief, especially now I'm in middle years. I need the company which makes my bins to have good quality control. And, because I'm on a fairly low budget, I need any pair of bins I buy to be cheap.
Now, most of the time, one has to pay a lot of money to acquire binoculars incorporating most if not all of these characteristics. Not with the Alpen, I'm happy to say. ItIt meets all the above personal criteria at a price which would normally have me wondering if the item fell off the back of a truck. So if you're looking for a pair of bins which has all the qualities of high-end binoculars but at a quarter of the price, check out the Alpens.
I'm very impressed with Alpen's performance. These bins have everything I want in a pair of working bins and I'm happy with them.
All the best
